Vaughan Williams - A Fantasia on Christmas Carols
Gustav Holst - 'Christmas Day' - a choral fantasy on old carols
Plus carols for audience and choir

Edward Seymour - Bass
Fiona Ashworth - Cello
Alan Horsey - Organ

Conductor - Simon Lindley

Vaughan Williams - A Fantasia on Christmas Carols, written for baritone, orchestra and chorus is based on four traditional English carols: ‘The Truth sent from above’, ‘Come all you worthy gentlemen’, ‘On Christmas Night’ (The Sussex Carol) and ‘There is a fountain filled with blood’, plus hints of other carols.

Holst's 'Christmas Day' - a choral fantasy on old carols, was written in 1910. A number of well-known carols are used in this ‘fantasy.’ Throughout the piece, Holst makes use of ‘God rest you merry gentlemen,’ ‘The First Nowell’ and a traditional melody derived from Brittany used to set the words ‘Come ye lofty; come ye lonely.’
