Matt Beckingham

Music Director

Picture
Matt Beckingham was appointed as our Music Director in 2022.

Matt has already had a wide-ranging career in music: from preparing choirs for the BBC Proms to recording at Abbey Road Studios; from orchestrating for London Symphony Orchestra to playing the main stage at festivals; and from conducting the Orchestra of Opera North, to conducting in the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge.

Matt has always been passionate that everyone should have the opportunity to experience great music making, which has seen him lead opera projects with the homeless and education projects in under-served communities.

Matt was Head of Music for In Harmony Opera North, a 'social justice through music' programme, which was awarded Best Classical Music Education Initiative by Classic FM and Rhinegold Publishing.

Some of Matt's other musical career highlights include:
  • touring with the Chorus of Opera North;
  • a series of concerts with London Philharmonic Choir at the British Museum;
  • preparing the BBC Proms Youth Choir for Elgar's 'Dream of Gerontius' with Sir Simon Rattle and Vienna Philharmonic;
  • playing for the late Queen Elizabeth II in the ballroom of Buckingham Palace and the Commonwealth service at Westminster Abbey;
  • orchestrating for Rundfunkchor Berlin, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and Royal Northern Sinfonia;
  • researching community engagement with New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Children's Choir and Boston Children's Choir as part of his Churchill Fellowship; and
  • finally, during lockdown, Matt released his pop single Look Up and grew a YouTube channel, reaching over 500k hits.
